What’s Changed With Free Business Checking Accounts

This article was originally published in September 2016. We update the content regularly because the banks, credit unions, and other providers we cover change their product offerings frequently. The most recent changes to the best free business checking accounts include introductory offer increases at two banks and major changes at three other banks.

Bank of America Increased Its Introductory Offer

In April, Bank of America increased its introductory offer to as much as $450 from $350 but also increased the requirement to earn the full bonus. This offer is good until December 31, 2019.

New account holders will earn $100 after depositing $1,000 within the first 60 days from account opening. You’ll earn an additional $50 when you use bill pay twice within the first 60 days. And, you can earn $300 when you open a new Bank of America small business credit card and spend $3,000 within the first 90 days. This introductory offer boost didn’t impact our ranking of this Bank of America small business checking account. Although the introductory offer is more rewarding than any other checking account offer on our list, it also has the most requirements in order to earn the full reward.

PNC Bank Increased Its Introductory Offer

PNC Bank in April increased to $200 from $100 its introductory offer. The Pittsburgh-based bank with branches in 19 states, says the offer is good until June 30, 2019. To qualify, you’ll need to maintain a minimum average cycle balance of $5,000 for your first three statement cycles and make at least 20 PNC debit card transactions during that same time period.

Earlier this year, the bank lowered the monthly fee on its PNC Business Checking account to $10 from $12 and made it easier to get the monthly maintenance fee waived. These changes did not impact our rankings because PNC still has a smaller footprint than banks we rank higher like US Bank or offers fewer free services like Capital One Bank.

TIAA Purchased EverBank

The financial services company TIAA completed its acquisition of Jacksonville, Florida-based EverBank in June 2018, and rebranded the online bank to TIAA Bank. Since the acquisition, TIAA Bank has not changed the account terms for its small business checking account, which charges no monthly maintenance fee. The account has a minimum opening deposit of $1,500 and offers an introductory first-year 1.21% annual percentage yield (APY) on balances up to $250,000.

Bank of Internet USA Rebranded as Axos Bank

Bank of Internet USA, the oldest online bank, was rebranded as Axos Bank in October 2018. The San Diego-based financial services provider is a subsidiary of Axos Financial, Inc., formerly BofI Holding, Inc. The company says the new name “better reflects the diversity of our existing businesses.” Axos Bank has not changed the account terms for its Basic Business Checking account, which charges no monthly fee and requires a minimum opening deposit of $1,000.

BB&T Bank Announced a Merger With SunTrust Bank

Federal Reserve Maintained Short-term Interest Rates

We watch for Federal Reserve interest rate changes because they impact the cost of money for banks. When the central bank increases its benchmark interest rate, the prime rate also increases. As a result, banks may change their account fees or pay interest on checking accounts. In March, the Fed left unchanged its benchmark rate. The Federal Reserve last raised rates a quarter percentage point in December 2018.

The Fed had forecast two rate hikes in 2019, but now predicts no rate changes for the balance of the year.

How We Evaluated Free Business Checking Accounts

A free business checking account is one that doesn’t have monthly maintenance fees, although it still has other costs. There are two types of free business checking accounts: those that don’t charge monthly maintenance fees at all and those that waive maintenance fees if certain criteria are met, which are most of the options included here.

Most free business checking accounts have low fees and limit the number of transactions in an account each month. However, the best free business checking accounts offer high numbers of transactions, access to sizable bank networks, introductory offers and access to additional banking services at low costs.

We evaluated free business checking accounts on these factors to determine the best:

  • Fees and terms: What other fees or restrictions are placed on free business banking
  • Introductory offers: Whether you may be eligible for a signup bonus
  • Size of bank network: Where a provider maintains branches or ATMs
  • Other account benefits: Extra perks that come with a free business checking account
  • Customer service: The ability to get help from the bank on questions or account issues
  • Account availability: How easy it is to maintain an account

Based on the factors above, our best free business checking account is the Chase Bank Total Business Checking account. This free business checking account has one of the lowest required minimum balances ― $1,500 monthly average ― to maintain your free account. Chase also has a sizeable bank network with more than 5,100 branches and 16,000 ATMs nationwide and offers a bonus for new customers.

While Chase is our choice for free business banking, there are benefits to using any provider on this list. Fit Small Business, for example, has been banking with Bank of America for more than five years and plans to continue using Bank of America for business checking. A Bank of America Business Fundamentals account is free if you maintain a $5,000 balance, and new customers may also qualify for up to $450.

We’ve also found that Chase offered the best small business checking account. With $500 in monthly deposits, your monthly fees can be waived. Plus, first-time account holders are currently being offered a $200 bonus for signing up.

Chase Bank: Best Overall Free Business Checking Account

Chase Total Business checking allows up to 100 free transactions per month and unlimited electronic deposits.

Chase Bank Fees

The Chase Total Business Checking account has the following costs:

  • Monthly fee: $15 if you don’t maintain a minimum balance of $1,500 or link your Total Business Checking account to a Chase Private Client Checking or Chase Premier Platinum Checking account; $12 if you fail to maintain a $1,500 balance but opt for electronic statements

Chase Bank Other Benefits

In addition to its introductory offer, Chase allows small business owners to place controls on business debit, deposit, and ATM cards so that only certain employees can access ATMs or make purchases. Chase also has special banking offers for military service members and their families.

What Chase Is Missing

While it is one of the best free business checking account providers, Chase Total Business Checking isn’t free unless you maintain a minimum average daily balance of at least $1,500 or meet other criteria. Chase also limits free business banking customers to 100 free transactions per month.

TIAA Bank Customer Service

Capital One Other Benefits

What Capital One Is Missing

While Capital One has no minimum balance requirement and offers unlimited free transactions for small business owners, it limits free cash deposits to $5,000, which can be a problem for some businesses that receive a lot of cash payments.
